Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
